Portable Generators

briggs-and-straton

Portable generators temporarily provide electric power when power is not available.   Portable generators are normally not permanently installed (connected) and can be easily moved to any location.   The largest users of light duty portable generators are residential U.S. homowners, most commonly in the 3 to 10 Kilowatt range.

Portable generators run on a variety of fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and LP gas.  The portable models are generally the least expensive, can be easily rolled out, filled with fuel or connected to a fuel source, such as a natural gas line, and manually started and hooked up to as needed to power loads.

Gasoline models do have short run times.  Their tanks must be refilled several times daily if you’re running the generator continuously.  And, since gasoline is not always available during a natural disaster or other long term emergency, they’re not always your best choice.    Diesel is equally scarce, but is actually the most efficient fuel to run in a generator, and diesel engines require far less maintenance than other options.  Natural gas or LP gas powered portables require a little more effort to hook up when needed, but generally offer longer run times, and the fuel may be more readily available in a long term power outage.

Pricing for portable generators ranges from approximately $130 for the least expensive model into the thousands for models that can power your entire home.  Here are a few models to consider when selecting a portable generator:
