Hurricane season officially started June 1st… And, as usual, they’re predicting a big year for storms. Are you ready?
As a former long time resident of the Florida panhandle, I can honestly tell you that, unless you have a backup power source for your home, you’re not ready! In 2004, Hurricane Ivan hit the Gulf Coast…not only did I ride the storm out, but I was on the beach the very afternoon after it blew through, surveying the damage… It was hot, humid, and worse – there would be no power for days and weeks in some parts of the area. Because there was no way to keep things cool, food quickly began to spoil, and the stench would become unbearable within days…and the heat, 90 plus degrees in the shade, and no way to cool off. Not even so much as a little fan. At night, the darkness seemed intense and some areas would be without light for many months…
Hot, sweaty, and exhausted….I remember walking (yes, walking, because there is NO gasoline to be had after a hurricane) the line of homes that faced the Gulf…. not a sound except the waves and my footsteps. Until I reached one house. I remember walking up the drive and hearing the quiet little chug of their natural gas powered generator…the owners weren’t there, they’d driven inland to wait out the storm, but their home was not only safe, but they had POWER. The air conditioner worked. The refrigerator was cooling. There was light. Just as it was supposed to, that little generator had started up just when the power went out, in the height of the storm, on the beachfront. And, it was still chugging away…. that generator kept chugging away for two solid weeks. While everyone else dealt with ruined food, moldy interiors, and damages that mounted into the tens of thousands of dollars per home, that one house stayed cool, dry, and comfortable. (That generator paid for itself many times over!)Even better, once the owners arrived home, other than a little cleanup, they were able to quickly resume their normal lives.
So, do you think you’re ready for a hurricane?
